Dead medium: The mechanical typewriter
Source(s): Continental Airlines captive magazine "SKYMALL", 1999, issue #4, p.17

I ran across something recently on typewriters, and a quick search of one of the DMWN archive sites didn't turn up anything similar.

From the Skymall catalog (c. 1999, issue no. 4 [?]), as distributed on Continental airlines:

[in the Hammacher Schlemmer section. p 17] "The classic manual typewriter. If you prefer working on a manual typewriter for some or all of your correspondence, Hammacher Schlemmer has found this updated classic from Olivetti that is a sturdy as it is portable. With all-metal construction, it weights only 16 pounds and has all standard featrures as well as simple improvements that same time and effort--a memory line finder, segment shift, automatic paragraph indentationi and stencil selection. The typewriter also features key-set tabulatioin, snap-up paper supports, two-color ribbon, easy-set margins, margin release key, carriage lock, backspace key and a paper-release lever. Vinyl carrying bag (included). 41/4 " H x 13: W x 13 3/4 " L (16lbs)" Price: $189.95
