Almost everything we take for granted in personal computing came out of SRI and Xerox PARC. You can see Doug Englebart captured on video at Stanford in 1968, demo'ing the new "mouse", incidentally demo'ing word processing, hyperlinks (including imagemaps), networks, and invents the seamless banana, at http://sloan.stanford.edu/MouseSite/1968Demo.html .
